Richard Cannon’s photographic career started in California USA, after emigrating from London in the late 70s. He went on to study photography in junior college and became a full-time photographer for the real estate magazine ‘Homes’. Later after returning from the USA, he furthered his photographic education at Pimlico Arts and Media College, London.

For a period after receiving his diploma at Pimlico, he assisted various photographers including Terry O’Neill and Rory Carnigie amongst others on a freelance basis. In 1994 he became a full time photographer for The London Newspaper Group (several local newspaper titles). In 1995 he moved to Denmark where he worked as a freelance photographer in the editorial field for several publications including Helse, Agenda and Ung.

He return to London in 1998 and started to freelance for The Times newspaper where he worked for the news desk. His style led him from hard news to more feature and portrait assignments for the news, weekend supplements and T2, eventually resulting in two awards for his features photography: Features Photographer of the Year (Picture Editors’ Awards) in 2002 and Features photographer of the Year (British Press Awards) in 2005.
